Architecture in the Afternoon Tours
First and Third Sundays, April through October • 2:00 p.m.

This 90-minute tour explores the mansion’s exterior and interior, including the cellar.  Discover why Gunston Hall’s carpenter-joiner William Buckland and master carver William Bernard Sears are highly regarded.

Regular admission.  Friends free.  Tour recommended for adults and young persons over 12 years old. 

Gunston Hall Conversations
Second and Fourth Sundays, April through October • 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. 

George Mason’s family, friends, and servants discuss politics, play games, and perform domestic skills in 1787 Virginia. The mini-program varies each session.   

Regular admission.  Friends free.

Historic Garden Week in Virginia Celebration

Exciting archaeological study brings us closer to the original landscape designed by George Mason. Re-discover the plantation grounds - and gain a deeper understanding of Colonel Mason.

Hunting for George Mason’s Landscape Tour
Saturdays, April 14 and April 21 • 1:15 and 3:15 p.m.

Walk the grounds with staff archaeologist Dave Shonyo. In a 45-minute tour, learn what archaeology has revealed about George Mason's landscape. A visit to the Mason family burying ground is optional.

Historic Highlights Hike: New Discoveries at Lexington Home of George Mason V
Sunday, April 22 • 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Learn about the plantation that belonged to Colonel Mason's eldest son. Enjoy a revealing lecture at Gunston Hall, then hike to the site with local historians Gary Knipling and Janet Cole. Presented in partnership with Mason Neck State Park.

Mothers Day: The Tea Table
Sunday, May 13 • Noon – 5:00 p.m.          

Enjoy authentic 18th-century savories, sweets and a spot of tea while engaging in delightful conversation with George Mason's neighbors and friends. Tours will highlight the roles of women at leisure in the Mansion and at labor in the hearth kitchen. A silhouette artisit will create keepsake images of family members from 2 to 4 p.m. 

$12, adults; $7, ages 6-18; $2, ages 2-5. $25 Family Admission. Friends discount. Separate fee for silhouettes; reservations recommended by calling the Museum Shop at 703-550-9220.

“Hold Ourselves in Readiness”: A Memorial Day Commemoration
Monday, May 28 • 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

George Mason created the Fairfax Independent Militia to protect the rights of local citizens. Mansion tours highlight Mason’s role in securing Virginia’s independence.
 
Regular admission.  $25 Family Admission. Free admission for active military personnel and veterans.

George Mason Day
Tuesday, June 12 • 5:30 p.m.

Celebrate the 236th anniversary of the ratification of Mason's Virginia Declaration of Rights with a wreath laying ceremony and remarks from Virginia Delegate Scott Surovell; reception to follow. 
 
Each visitor receives a copy of the Virginia Declaration of Rights to commemorate the anniversary of the unanimous adoption of the Declaration by the Fifth Virginia Convention at Williamsburg, Virginia. The Virginia Declaration of Rights drafted in 1776 to proclaim the inherent rights of men, including the right to rebel against "inadequate" government. It influenced a number of later documents, including the Declaration of Independence (1776), the Bill of Rights (1789), and the French Revolution's Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1789).

Free admission for all.


Events do not require a reservation unless specifically stated.  The calendar is subject to change.  A 30-minute mansion tour is part of all public programs.  Tours are offered from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
